This process can be overwhelming for both parents and students,

especially with the barrage of flyers and cards sent to your mailbox.

How Do You Choose the Photographer Who is Right for You?

To guarantee a great senior portrait experience, it is important

that the style and skill of the photographer, his personality

AND what the studio offers be a fit for you.  One of the biggest

mistakes people make is simply comparing photographers’ prices

on paper.  Many things determine what a photographer charges,

and simply comparing pricing doesn't help you understand that.

Here is a list of things to think about in addition to cost:

1. Find Your Style – It’s important to have at least an idea of the photography style you like the best,

and that comes from researching and looking at photo examples. - Look for images that speak to you.

Some photographers’ styles are more retro, some may be more “sexy,” some edgy like in a magazine,

some photo journalistic, some more classic and clean...which appeals to you?  These are things you

should consider when doing your research.

When seeing examples, ask yourself “Would I be happy if these were my images”?  This may also help

in understanding the photographer’s skill level. Once you see the difference in the quality of work

and you’ll appreciate your final decision.

2. Ask to See It All – When comparing studios ask for a sample of an entire senior photography sessions

(like an entire album). This will help you see if a photographer lacks consistency in the quality of the

images...and if the images suddenly start to look alike. Variety and uniqueness are two key elements.

Photographers can shoot 150 images, but may only display the three that are good. You don’t want to

limit yourself to just three choices, do you? That’s why you need to see an entire session, so you can

tell if the photographer is consistently good...or just lucky every now and then.

3. Look to Connect – Find a photographer you can connect with and who can bring out the best in

you! Feeling comfortable during your photo shoot is the number-one most important thing if you want

to have great, relaxed photographs. A professional photographer will guide you through the process

helping you with posing and expressions.
